Night public transport in Riga will be available until end of this year
"This is a logical decision of the local government, because the night transport is used by both Riga residents and visitors of our city, and many people rely on this service," says Vadims Baraņņiks, chairman of the Riga City Council Committee for Traffic and Transport Affairs.
When the night transport was first launched early in June, this year, it was scheduled to run until the end of August. Taking into account that the number of passengers using night transport is growing, it has been decided to provide the service until the end of November.
Altogether, "Rīgas satiksme" provides 10 bus routes that link the city centre with Riga’s most populated districts. The terminal of the night buses is located at trolleybus stop Railway Terminal Square/Central Railway Terminal. This stop has been selected because of its rather high capacity (there are three public transport stops near the underground passages), which is sufficient to serve several routes. Another reason is that this terminal is located in the very heart of the city near the central train station and is a good departure point to reach any of Riga districts.
All buses leave the city centre simultaneously, in round hours. Departure times from the terminal in the city centre are set so that passengers could better understand and remember night bus schedules. Buses of all routes leave the terminal at Railway Terminal Square every hour from 24:00 till 05:00, but from terminals at the other ends of night routes – at half-round hours.
The tariff for all passengers is LVL 1, and tickets are available from drivers only. Night transport is a commercial service and therefore is not subject to regular tariffs and discounts, except for those passengers entitled to use public transport free of charge under the Disability law.
